Laura's Corner

I work very hard and am attending college to obtain my degree in the Human Service field. Writing makes me feel alive and gives me the opportunity to touch those whom I would not be able to otherwise. Last but not least, I have been blessed with two amazing daughters who love me completely and support my dreams. Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or feedback.

X, Y and Z.....

"If you would just (X, Y or Z), you would be happy."    I'm sure each one of us could fill in the blanks accordingly.

My Maternal Grandmother is a saint. Unlike me, she attends church every day.  At the age of 93, she will respond the same way every single time you ask her this question, "Why have you had such a good life?"  Her response, "Because I've always done the right thing."

There has been more than once, well, maybe at least 100 times, that I've been told I would just be happy if I DID something.  What, might you ask, well, let me travel in that direction.

For some odd reason others tend to believe that I'm just not as happy, peaceful, wonderful and everything else full under the sun because I'm not like them.  I live outside the box, I am boisterous, tattooed, and in a completely different place in my life that a great majority than my family.

In thinking about what others said, I've come to the conclusion that each one of us has the right to make choices that may or may not please the greater good.   Let's go there.

As an adult, I've had experiences a-plenty.  I've said yes more often than no, to situations which at times have lead me to heartache.  I've traveled down the same roads, completed U-turns and have revisited in the hopes that things may be different the next time around.  Despite all of that, I have written a colorful biography which includes tales of demise, grandeur and tons of fun.  My friends have lived through me and my experiences, and will continue to do so as time marches on.

We believe we have the answers.  I believe I do as well.  Deep down inside somewhere most of us are certain that if our friends and loved ones would just X, Y or Z, they would be happier.  Yet, when all is said and done, they must walk whatever path they choose every single moment of their lives.

Each one of us has the right to write our own biographies.  We will fill the pages with adventure, fear, taking chances and sometimes the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.  Despite the fact someone may be making poor choices according to our standards, we must allow each person the right to say yes or no to each and every individual situation put in their path.

Drugs, alcohol, obesity, smoking, gambling, shopping, overdrawn accounts, homelessness, addictions and pornography.  Each one builds a life story which creates an adventure.  We have absolutely no idea from minute to minute if our loved ones will ever break free.  Day by day we sit by, hoping, praying, crying and screaming at times, that one person will listen, grab hold and life a life free of addiction and whatever else may be keeping within their own personal prison.

Without pain, we would know no joy.  Without anxiety, we would never understand peace.  Without walking through the dark, we would never see that flicker of hope.

I invite each one of you instead, to focus on yourselves.  Fill your book with exciting adventures.  Whatever way you choose to go will allow you to bond with others and give you an epic tale to share with whomever you choose to spend your final years.

I also want to thank each one of you for being a part of my epic adventures.  Without you, I would cease to exist on this or any other page.

Much thanks!
