Whitnall Middle School Begins Walk-A-Thon Fundraising Efforts

Whitnall Middle School students and staff have kicked off their 2014 Walk-A-Thon, the school’s annual service learning opportunity and fundraising effort. This year’s walk is scheduled for Friday, May 30, from 12:45-3 p.m., at Whitnall High School’s Falcon Field track, 5000 S. 116th St.

Starting May 14, students began collecting pledges from family, friends and neighbors to raise money for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in honor of WMS custodian Joe Lassiter. Lassiter was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and received aggressive treatments at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, IL.

Donations from the WMS Walk-A-Thon will go to CTCOA’s Assistance in Healthcare program, which helps cancer patients and their families pay for non-medical expenses such as mortgage and rent payments, utility bills, groceries and much more.

“Joe is a very important member of the Whitnall family and our students, staff and the community have rallied around him and supported him through hard times,” Walk-A-Thon co-coordinator and WMS teacher Kayla Fraley said. Walk co-coordinator and WSD instructional technology leader Kathryn Kaiser said, “To be able to dedicate this year’s walk to a cause that’s important to Joe means a lot to all of us.”

Those who donate can do so on a per-lap basis, or with a set donation amount. Pledges are due May 28. In addition, during the week of the walk, the school will sell blue t-shirts that read “Stronger Than Cancer” on the front and #joestrong on the back for $10 each.

This is the ninth annual installment of the middle school’s fundraising walk. The previous eight efforts resulted in more than $70,000 raised for various charities and causes.

Those who do not know a WMS student but are interested in making a donation can contact Fraley at kfraley@whitnall.com or call the school at (414) 525-8650.
