Paradise Theater building in West Allis back on sale block

Published on: 11/5/2010

The Paradise Theater building, in West Allis, is being listed for sale--just months after it was sold to an investment group led by the wife of the former owner of a Wauwatosa cinema.

The building, at 6217-6301 W. Greenfield Ave., was sold in June to Paradise LLC, according to documents filed with the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds.

Paradise LLC's registered agent is Courtney Hollis, wife of Jay Hollis, former owner of the Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse, 6823 W. North Ave.

The property is now listed with Dickman Co., a Milwaukee commercial real estate brokerage. The asking price is $100,000.

Neither Courtney nor Jay Hollis returned my phone call or emails.

City building inspectors have ordered that the 82-year-old building, which has been declared uninhabitable, be either repaired or demolished.

Paradise LLC in June was given six months to make substantial progress on repairs, or face a demolition order, said John Stibal, West Allis development director. Stibal told me he's not aware of any major work that's occurred at the building.

"We expect them to perform," he said. "We'll see what happens."

The theater stopped showing films in 1996, and the building was later used by religious groups. It was acquired by State Bank of Chilton a year ago after the bank filed a foreclosure suit against the previous owner, Ziklag Global Investments Inc.

Along with the former theater, the 31,600-square-foot building includes additional retail space and second-floor office space.
