Memory care housing for nuns proposed in Greenfield
Greenfield — Two Milwaukee religious orders are proposing to build Our Lady of the Angels, a 44-unit "memory care" facility for nuns suffering from dementia and related disorders.
The city Planning Commission this week recommended that the Common Council approve the development, city Community Development Manager Charles Erickson said Thursday.
The council is expected to hold a public hearing and vote on the proposal next month, he said.
The complex offers independent living, assisted living and nursing home care for senior citizens.
The city plans to negotiate with the orders a payment in lieu of taxes, Erickson said.
Such a payment is sometimes paid by religious orders and other institutions that are exempt from paying property taxes. Payments take into account the impact of facilities on the city and the loss of property taxes that would be paid by a non-exempt development.
