Greenfield grocer seeks OK to sell hookah products

Greenfield - Ali El Hashash, the owner of Holy Land Grocery Store, is scheduled to ask the city Planning Commission tonight for permission to sell "hookah" tobacco products at the store.

The small grocery store, 2765 Ramsey Ave., doesn't currently sell tobacco products, city Community Development Manager Chuck Erickson said Tuesday.

A hookah is a water pipe with a smoke chamber, a bowl, a pipe and a hose, according to MayoClinic.com.

Specially made tobacco is heated, and the smoke passes through water and is then drawn through a rubber hose to a mouthpiece, according to the web site, which says hookah smokers might inhale more smoke than cigarette smokers.

Hookah pipe smoking is offered at some bars in the Milwaukee area.
