EPA grant aids city's redevelopment effort

June 7, 2011

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $1.2 million in brownfield grants to West Allis.

The city will use $200,000 of it to clean up the former Milwaukee Gray Iron site, located at 84th and Greenfield Avenue. That will clear the way for a major development, which may be imminent at the site. City officials are negotiating to attract a potential $20-million development that could include a hotel and a neighborhood grocery store.

The city will use the remaining $1 million in EPA grants to establish a Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund that will encourage development of sites that need or might need environmental cleanup.
