West Allis — The Fourth of July will mean three days of celebration here that will include a huge parade, a Breakfast of Champions to honor veterans and top high school students and the Kids from Wisconsin performing at the Wisconsin State Fair.

The parade will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, stepping off at 77th Street and Greenfield Avenue, heading east on Greenfield to 70th Street where it will wheel south and march to Veterans' Memorial park at 70th and National Avenue.

New to the parade this year will be classic cars and parade organizers are crossing their fingers that the Navy Band from the Great Lakes naval training station will also be able to come. If it does, it would be a first.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Marching Band will be in the parade again to wow parade goers and it will give its famous Fifth Quarter performance at the post-parade festivities.

The post-parade celebration also includes games, food, a rock climbing wall, inflatables and the popular Speleo Cave, that made its Fourth of July celebration debut last year. The multilevel Speleo Cave is for anyone who weighs less than 200 pounds, is shorter than 6 feet tall and is older than 4 and wants to see what it's like crawling through a cave.

Once again, Andrea and the Mods will provide musical entertainment after the Fifth Quarter until the festival closes at 10 p.m.

The youngsters of the community will actually start off the city's celebration of the nation's birth with a coaster wagon and bicycle decorating and costume competition. Kids 12 and younger as of July 4 who do the most imaginative decorating jobs or have the best costumes will win prizes. But everybody will get to parade around the Centennial Park Plaza of the City Hall where the competition will be held at 6 p.m.

July 3 will dawn early with the Breakfast of Champions at 8 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and honor veterans and the top high school scholars, musicians and athletes. The cost is $10 and reservations were due June 20 but may be taking more at (414) 302-8304.

Friday, July 4, events at Wisconsin State Fair Park will feature an upbeat grandstand show at 8 p.m. by the high-energy Kids from Wisconsin singing and dancing.

Fireworks sponsored by the city of West Allis are slated for 9:30 p.m. at the fair park.

Due to construction in the State Fair Park north lot, fireworks spectators will not be able to view the fireworks from there. Also, the State Fair Park will now charge the $5 parking fee for those attending the fireworks in the grandstands.
