West Allis applauding jobs
Gov. Scott Walker visited Brookdale Senior Living in West Allis on Thursday, July 17, because the more than 200 new jobs it will bring to the city in information technology, finance and asset management are the kind of jobs the state is trying to attract.
West Allis led the way in manufacturing and was hit hard when many of those jobs went overseas. However, state officials believe the kinds of positions coming into the city are the jobs of the future.
seen via social media sites
Seeking to make neighborhoods stronger by knitting neighbors closer together, West Allis has established a free online social media site for each of its 26 neighborhoods.
The site was created with the help of nextdoor.com. The sites are free and information is shared only with others in the neighborhood, said West Allis Mayor Dan Devine, who is spearheading a drive toward stronger neighborhoods.
To use Nextdoor, members must verify that they live in the neighborhood. Information shared on the site is password-protected and cannot be accessed via search engines or by those outside the neighborhood.
In addition, Nextdoor does not share personal information with any third party, Devine said.
West Allis officials see this new form of social media reinvigorating neighborhoods.
"Nextdoor is the perfect tool to restore connections among residents," Devine said in a news release announcing the site.
Details on setting up Nextdoor in the various West Allis neighborhoods is available at City Hall, (414) 302-8200.
Local author writes story
of love, faith, foregiveness
West Allis author Stephenie Lammers explores love, faith and forgiveness in her new contemporary Christian romance novel, "Beauty of the Heart."
The story introduces readers to 16-year-olds Ian and Isabella. To the outside world, Ian had it all. He was popular, intelligent, drop-dead handsome and the quarterback of the football team; but something was missing in his life.
Isabella, on the other hand, was a tiny, broken, scarred girl whose past haunted her. She thought she would never break free from her painful abusive past.
When Isabella met Ian, that all changed.
Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.

The Lamplight Inn of West Allis, located downtown, is an independent and assisted living community with a separate memory care unit.
