Dan Jansen Fest throws in pie, throws out teen tent

May 24, 2010

Greenfield — The 16th annual Dan Jansen Family Fest will again serve as the unofficial kickoff to summer when it begins Friday at Konkel Park, 5151 W. Layton Ave.

The event, named after the local Olympic speedskating gold medalist, will feature local bands, carnival rides, food vendors and family entertainment.

New at this year's festival is a pie-eating contest at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and a pie-throwing booth at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

All proceeds benefit the Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department. Over the last 15 years, the festival has raised $650,000, including the most recent donation of $150,000 toward the Greenfield Community Center.

Festival organizers and police are looking to avoid a repeat of last year's problems. The 2009 event was marred by fights, 40 arrests and a battered police officer.

Among this year's changes was the elimination of a "teen tent," which police said drew teens and young adults who started fights at last year's festival.
