West Allis — The rezoning for a 38-unit proposed 92nd Street Commons apartments will likely find support from a city committee and, in turn, the Common Council on Tuesday now that the opposition has largely fizzled on the proposed development.
Those near the project site at 1803 and 1807 South 92nd St. had initially blitzed City Hall with objections ranging from traffic to concerns about whether the apartments would go to subsidized housing. But last week, the developer held a neighborhood meeting and much of the opposition seems to be eased.
'Neighbors seemed OK with it,' said Alderman Thomas Lajsic, Safety and Development Committee chairman. 'I think they saw it as a quality development.'
'What he showed us was impressive,' said Rosemary Ruegsegger, president of the Maples Four Condominium Association, who was among those in the 11-unit complex across the street from the proposed site who hasd expressed concerns.
Traffic is particularly bad now because the Greenfield Avenue bridge over Highway 45 is being replaced, Ruegsegger said. Once the bridge is open, traffic resulting from the addition of 38 units may not hurt that much, she reasoned.
The developer also had done his homework and was sure there was enough of a market to justify what struck critics as high rents, she said. The studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments would be in the range of $800 to $1,100 per month.
'He knew what he was talking about,' Ruegsegger said. 'And it would clean up the area over there.'
Some still have concerns about the plan, 'but it's nothing like before we went to the meeting,' Ruegsegger said.
The council is expected to vote on the project's requested planned-unit development rezoning Tuesday. The project would still have to go through a building and site approval process.
