Hales Corners — There's a rock band in town that's starting to find its voice.

Saturday Detention, a cover band made up of Whitnall High School employees, has appeared on Hales Corners stages for the Fourth of July, and other events, and is geared up to play during the Village's National Night Out, on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The band is also known to play gigs in Waukesha, Mukwonago and Delafield.

The group, which has also written a few original songs, started officially one year ago, but the story of its formation is somewhat unclear "because it was a series of false starts," said Tony Brazouski, lead vocals and guitars.

All five members met each other as employees of Whitnall High School with a mutual interest in music or shared history playing in bands. Cheryl Staats, drums, percussion and vocals, had been a member of The Love Monkeys, a Milwaukee-based band. Brazouski was in a college band that played at Summerfest.

Some of their "false starts" included playing in a talent show four years ago, the district's 50th birthday party and at Falcon Fest at Finn McGuire's Irish Pub & Grill. With every performance, the demand continued for Saturday Detention to keep playing together.

The band's current members are Brazouski, Staats, Dan Makal, lead guitar and vocals, Kevin Schmidt, bass guitar and vocals, and Chris Nowak, horns, keyboard and percussion. The members represent a variety of ages, backgrounds, musical tastes and preferences. The result is a diverse, energetic and unique style that knows no limits.

"It's definitely eclectic," said Makal. "That's what's good about the band — you're not going to get stuck in one genre."

John Cougar Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews, Jimi Hendrix and U2 all grace the Saturday Detention set list.

"If you look at our set list it's pretty diverse. Everything from 1980s rap music to 'Sweet Caroline' and everything up until today—it's a very wide array of taste and talent," said Brazouski.

But even as their set list is prone to changing, their mission as a group is always to rock, said Staats. They just don't want to be confused as a Whitnall High School teacher band.

"We want to be known as a band, not a Whitnall band. That might have been how it started, but that's not how it's evolved," said Staats.

Saturday Detention does not have a CD but its music is available online at SaturdayDetentionTheBand.com. The tend to play a couple times a month and for special events.

"We're just excited to diversify and play a little bit more," said Brazouski. "Hales Corners has been exceptionally generous and supportive of us."
