Smith places fourth

in indoor triple jump

Marcus Smith, a West Allis Central graduate, placed fourth in the triple jump at 49 feet-3 inches for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend.

Smith also owns the fourth-best distance in the triple jump for the 2012 indoor season at 49 feet-7¾ inches, which is also the school record at UW-Whitewater.

Smith earned All-American honors by finishing seventh in the event at the 2011 Division III outdoor meet.

Whitnall's Harmeyer

earns scholar-athlete honor

Whitnall graduate Heather Harmeyer is the recipient of the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Judy Kruckman Women's Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete Award.

Harmeyer, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, carries a 3.63 grade-point average in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and received Stout's Chancellor's Academic Award.

She has several entries in the all-time school record book at Stout on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise, and she qualified individually for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association national championships on the bars. That event will be held in Brockport, N.Y., March 23 to 24.

Harmeyer has also been active in several campus committees and has done volunteer work for the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and the Children's Miracle Network.

April youth basketball tourney has several team openings

North American Youth Sports still has openings in its annual spring youth basketball tournament at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on April 13 to 15.

This tournament will feature 10 different brackets. They include boys and girls in grades 5-12. All grades are based on the grade in which a student is currently enrolled.

The entry fee for this tournament is $145 and guarantees each team a minimum of three games. There will be awards presented in each bracket. The entry deadline is March 23.

Recruiting seminar

presented at Central High

'College Recruiting Simplified,' a free seminar offering advice and guidance on maximizing chances of receiving a college athletic scholarship, will be presented at West Allis Central High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Dave Carl of NCSA Athletic Recruiting will head the seminar, which is directed toward student-athletes and their families who are involved with the college athletic recruitment process.

NagaWOW Wednesday golf league has openings

The Wednesday 18-hole golf league at Naga-Waukee Golf Course has openings for the 2012 season.

Wanaki Ladies Golf League seeking Golf Belle members

The Wanaki Ladies Golf League is seeking members for The Golf Belles, a 9-hole Thursday morning league that runs from May 31 to Aug. 31.

Wanaki Swingers accepting golfers for Tuesday league

The Wanaki Swingers, a Tuesday morning women's nine-hole golf league at Wanaki Golf Course, is accepting new members for the 2012 season.

This is a non-handicap league and play begins May 8 and continues through Aug. 28. Tee times begin at 6:56 a.m. and continue to 8 a.m. For further information call (262) 252-3480 and ask for the contact person for the Wanaki Swingers.

Women's golf league looking for members

The Tuesday women's 18-hole golf league at Naga-Waukee Golf Course is accepting new members for the 2012 season.

All interested players must have a handicap of 36 or less. Play begins in May. Golf begins about 6:45 a.m. and continues until about 8:30 a.m.
