Alverno College will launch a new Master of Science in Community Psychology degree program for women and men in the fall of 2011. This marks the fifth master’s degree program or licensure-to-master’s specialization developed by the college in the last five years.
“Community psychology is a rapidly growing field, and our master’s program at Alverno will address a critical need to enhance the quality of life for individuals throughout the region,” said Alverno College President Mary J. Meehan. “For years, we’ve worked to be a community leader in taking a proactive approach to health – both physical and behavioral.” As co-chair of Well-City Milwaukee initiative, Meehan led local business leaders in a three-year effort resulting in a Well City USA designation from the Wellness Councils of America. In addition, Alverno emphasized its commitment to wellness by becoming the first private college in the state to have a smoke-free campus in June of 2007.
Community psychology looks not only at the individual, but at how they are shaped by their surrounding environments and support systems. Professionals in the field work particularly with at-risk populations, such as people requiring mental health assistance. In Wisconsin, mental health and substance abuse social workers rank among the top 20 fastest growing occupations (according to data drawn from the U. S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration). In addition, the following career-related fields are included in the top 20 occupations with the most openings in Wisconsin: child, family and school social workers; medical and health services managers; and educational, vocational and school counselors.
Many experts in the community psychology field also work with the significant veteran population. More than two million veterans have been deployed for the wars since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The community psychology model helps veterans or chronically mentally ill people adjust to the community, while also allowing greater access to services. Professionals in the field help to prevent problems before they start, and empower individuals to take control of both their environment and their lives.
Alverno College’s program focuses on health, prevention and intervention, and will offer two tracks. The first is a Licensed Professional Counselor Track, which will give students advanced clinical skills, focusing on the needs of the individual and how individuals are shaped by their community. It will also prepare them to work as licensed counselors.
The second is a Community Research and Consultation Track, which will emphasize the skills needed to address a wide array of community issues, preparing students to work in research, policy and program development, and management.
Students interested in applying for, or learning more about the Community Psychology Master’s Degree program, should go to www.alverno.edu/communitypsych, or call the admissions office at (414)-382-6100.
